EU considers US-style green cards for migrants

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The EU is considering US-style green cards to regulate economic immigrants and combat Europe's ageing population, it announced on Tuesday (11 January).

 

In a bid to promote a broad debate about "the most appropriate" common rules for admitting economic migrants in the EU, the European Commission has published a discussion paper.

 

By the end of this year, the Commission is supposed to put forward a policy plan to deal with the issue.

 

"We want to address the actors involved before we put forward our own proposal", EU Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini told journalists.

 

He pointed out that only by this "bottom-up" approach could Brussels encourage a positive attitude towards economic migrants, rather than strengthening their image as a threat to European citizens.

 

"I believe that Europe needs to identify clear conditions and rules for legal economic migration in order to fight illegal immigration", said Mr Frattini.
